Something to remember on Election Day

Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
to whom belong wisdom and might.
He changes times and seasons;
He removes kings and sets up kings;
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding;
He reveals deep and hidden things;
He knows what is in the darkness,
and the light dwells with him.

– Daniel 2.20-22, ESV

Emotions run high today. Anxiety has reached new heights in this election cycle. The shockwaves of today’s decision will be felt for years.

If we have to be under a Hillary presidency, will we have an attitude like Daniel?

If we are a under a Donald presidency, will we have an attitude like Daniel?

God revealed to Daniel the meaning of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream and Daniel offered thanks to God in the above prayer. Remember, Daniel was dragged to Babylon as a captive and forced to served under King Nebuchadnezzar—the guy who destroyed his kingdom and was now threatening to kill all his wise men because he was upset. In spite of the man on the throne, Daniel recognized the supremacy of God. (If you’ve read the book of Daniel, you will also recall how God humbled Nebuchadnezzar).

God removes kings (and presidents) and sets up kings (and presidents)

No matter who ends up being elected, no matter how much they cheated, no matter how awful they are, God can (and will) still accomplish His sovereign purpose. Daniel discovered this truth in his lifetime. Under every ruler, Daniel maintained his faith and earned respect for his integrity. Even if your worst nightmare comes true today (with regards to the Election), God will still be God.

God reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness.

I know that at least one of these candidates is crooked and may never receive the due penalty in this lifetime. However, God knows what is hidden and will someday exact His justice. We are rightfully angry when injustice abounds, but remember that vengeance belongs to the Lord and He will repay.

The light dwells in God.

These “times that try men’s souls” are a blessing in disguise. For the Christian, it shakes us out of our lethargy, recalling to our minds that we are but “strangers and sojourners” on this earth. We may love our country, but in the end, we ought to love God even more. As sad as it would be for our country to fall further into decline, it is the nature of nations to do so. Just remember: our home is waiting for us on the other side.

All these died in faith, without receiving the promises, but having seen them and having welcomed them from a distance, and having confessed that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For those who say such things make it clear that they are seeking a country of their own. And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return. But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.

Do your civic duty and vote today. No matter the outcome, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. Nothing can separate us from His love.
