The Israelites were commanded to set up stones as a memorial after they crossed the miraculously-parted Jordan River. It was intended to be a teaching opportunity for the parents and a remembrance for all of God’s mighty power and fulfillment of promise.
Oh, how often we forget—as the Israelites did—God’s kindnesses to us!
What has he done for me? For you?
– Jesus’ sacrifice
– Grace and truth through Christ
– Forgiveness of our debt of sin
– His unfailing, steadfast love
– Answered prayers
– Years of protection
– Daily provision
So many blessings, so often forgotten in the grueling grind of life, ought to be written down and reviewed regularly.
Specific answers to prayer, specific incidents of His care in our own life ought to be etched indelibly into our hearts or even posted on the walls of our homes. Talk to your children and friends about what He has done for you. Write it in a journal or make a laminated quick reference for the dark days when all seems futile and hopeless.
A thankful heart does not materialize by accident, but is cultivated and nurtured like a tender plant.
Make a habit of giving thanks, etching your blessings in stone to the glory of God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ.
“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.”
~ Psalm 9:1 ESV
Oh, a huge amen to this! You’ve really nailed it, “a grateful heart must be cultivated.”

Elihu,
I love that quote! Thank you for the reminder to hold fast to our blessings. I was just speaking to my daughter-in-law about this very subject. Years ago, I started a blessing book where I would write about how I saw God’s blessings in my life. I think I got the idea from my mom often singing the old song, “Count Your Blessings.”
The holiday season is not the only time for counting our blessings. Each day is a day of mercies and love from our Lord.
Blessings to YOU, my friend!

A blessing book! I love it! We still sing “Count Your Blessings” in our congregation from time. So many of those old songs really hit the nail on the head. May the Lord continue to bless you also, Beckie!

I need to put the monuments up. Thank you for the reminder. I tell people this, but need to do it myself.

Did you know that you have a Planned Parenthood ad feeding into your page?

No. I didn’t. Unfortunately, I can not control the ads that pop up on my page unless I pay a yearly premium fee. I can report ads, but I haven’t seen that one show up. Thank you for letting me know. I’ll be on the lookout.
