Choosing Thankfulness

I’ve seen phrases like “thankful” or “grateful” or “blessed” on t-shirts, jewelry, hashtags and more. It’s great that people are proclaiming these attitudes, but it takes more than a catch-phrase to have a truly thankful heart.

Can I give thanks when my heart is broken?

Can I be thankful when my finances are shot to pieces?

Can I feel blessed when there is a newly-empty chair at my table?

It’s not easy to lift our hands in praise when our heart is sinking with sorrow. Job showed us how to do this, as did the apostles and King David. They gave thanks to the Lord through tears, choosing to recognize God as their imperishable inheritance.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

To all my readers: Happy Thanksgiving!

I appreciate your encouragement and friendship over the past several years. May the Lord fill you with the abundance of His presence today and always.

  1. Yes, thankfulness is a heart choice. I just had a heart catheterization yesterday. Can’t lift the Turkey into the oven until Friday evening for a Saturday feast. They found a fairly clean big heart. But they didn’t find what is causing problems. You could focus on the unknown ailment or you can focus on “Yippee, my heart is fine!” Thank you, God. And thank you for a great post.

  2. Thank you for this excellent word today. Thanksgiving is difficult when you’re suffering with any problem. We don’t always feel grateful in tough situations, but knowing that God is in control of everything gives us so much assurance. Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for continuing to enrich so many lives with your blog.

  3. Thank you for this post. Learning to be thankful in all situations is something we should all strive for. Clearly taught in scripture, but so hard to do.

  4. Amen to this post. It’s so difficult to be grateful and have a thankful heart in difficult times and circumstances. But God is good all the time and we do well to remember that and fight through the tears. Thanks so much for posting. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving day. Dee
