The Names of Jesus: December 2020 Scripture Writing Plan

It’s been a year—a difficult, aggravating, mind-boggling year.

As we enter the holidays, we are weary and wary. More of us will be facing empty chairs either because of loss or simply because we are isolated. I am praying for each of us to be surrounded with the steadiness and consistency of God’s love as we enter the winter months.

Let’s take this final month of the year to fix our minds and hearts on Jesus. I can think of no better way to close this year and approach the next than to meditate on Jesus. In Philippians, Paul writes:

“God has highly exalted him [Jesus] and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2.9-11)

There is power in the name of Jesus. It is a name greater than any on earth. Like His Father, God, Jesus has multiple names which provide insight into both His character and nature. Some of these names include:

• Immanuel: God with us
• The Prince of Peace
• The Great High Priest
• The Shepherd
• Messiah (Anointed One)
• Christ (Anointed One)
• The Alpha & The Omega: The Beginning and End
• The Word
• The Life
• The Light
• The Living Water
• The Bread of Life
• The Son of Man (He came in human form)
• The Son of God
• The Lamb of God (who takes away the sins of the world through His sacrifice)
• King of Kings
• Wonderful Counselor
• Teacher or Rabbi
• Mediator
• The Truth
• The Chief Cornerstone
• Man of Sorrows
• Founder & Perfecter of our faith
• Savior

I have only selected 15 names to meditate on for December, but I would encourage you to dig for more. As you read and copy these passages, consider what each name teaches you about Jesus. Meditate on Him and use these names to praise Him more fully. It’s so easy to get bogged down in the tragedies of a year such as this and not recognize the wonderful blessing of having Christ living within us.
