Each day is awash with choices.
Some choices are simple ones: “What should I have for breakfast?” or “Which outfit should I wear to wear to work?” Other choices are weightier, such as if you will marry (and whom), where to work, where to live, which church to attend, etc. Having the freedom to make choices is both an immense blessing and an immense responsibility. We shouldn’t take it lightly.
When faced with momentous choices, what should the decision-making process look like? Considering your past choices (both good and bad), what did you learn from your experience? What have you noticed about how people in the Bible made choices?
In the scripture bad choices were often the result of strong emotions, peer pressure, or apathy. Good choices, by contrast, were prayerfully wrought and flowed from a heart trained to trust in the Lord. This month, we’ll be writing through scriptures in which people made choices–both good and bad. As you go through each scripture, consider the mindset of the person who made those choices:
- What motivated them?
- What was it they truly wanted?
- What was their relationship with God?
- What consequences resulted from their choice?
- Did they trust in God or were they trusting in something or someone else (like themselves)?
I’d also encourage you to write out choices you are facing, so you can pray about them. Although it’s likely you aren’t facing lions, serpents, kings, or fiery furnaces, your decisions still carry weight and consequence. I hope you will join us this month as we meditate on some of the choices being made in the scriptures. It is my prayer that it will help each one of us to be conscientious in our own choices as we strive to follow Jesus.
