God Really is Smarter than Everyone Else

The Creation magnifies its Creator. Through the Creation, we see God’s attributes (if we are paying attention):

• The sky, with it’s ever-changing canvas shows us God’s endless creativity
• The seasons, the sunrise and sunset, the water cycle reveal His constancy.
• The well-designed creatures—whose bodies perform functions without conscious thoughts—testify to God’s supreme wisdom.

God surpasses us on every level.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

~ Isaiah 55.8-9, ESV

We pay lip-service to God’s wisdom, and yet when life does not go according to our own “brilliant” plans, we question Him. During those seasons in life when nothing makes sense, we are tempted to doubt the Lord. When those seasons come, it’s time to go to His creation and remember who He is and who we are.

In the book of Job, after Job concludes his questioning and Elihu tries knocking sense into everybody, God comes down and reminds Job of His supreme power and wisdom by pointing to His creation:

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said:

“Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
Dress for action like a man;
I will question you, and you make it known to me.

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?

Tell me, if you have understanding.
Who determined its measurements—surely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
when the morning stars sang together
and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

~ Job 38.1-7, ESV (emphasis mine)

God speaks to Job for four chapters. At the conclusion of God’s words, Job replies, “I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” (Job 42.3) Job recognized his own insignificance as he stood in God’s presence, listened to God’s words, and could not answer His detailed questions on the creation.

Even with all our scientific knowledge, we have barely scratched the surface. There is so much we do not know and still do not understand. Just look at all the confusion over nutrition! Most of the scientists don’t agree with each other, even on asserted “facts!”

Go to the Mountains—literally.

I have lived and travelled all over the state of California and it seemed like we had mountains everywhere. When I lived in the desert, the Sierra Nevadas were practically on my doorstep. I could look out my back window and see the sun setting behind the peaks. Seeing it from a distance is inspiring; standing at the base is humbling. If you’re in the season of doubt or frustration, drive to the mountains and spend some time in the physical presence of something far bigger than yourself.

When I stand before a mountain, I become immediately aware of my own smallness. Looking down from the the mountain, I am keenly aware of my own mortality. Mountains are humbling things.

When our intellect stands before the mind of God, we should feel that same awe-inspiring humility.

“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

“For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?”
“Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”

Dear one, broken and weary, your trials are not overlooked by the Lord of Creation. This same God who who made majestic mountains is same God who created your intricate eye. He is intimately aware of what you feel that nobody else knows or understands. He knows the fears that lurk in your heart. God is bigger than the ‘why’ and carry you through any ‘what’. Keep reaching for Him and don’t be afraid to pour out your fear and doubt at His throne. As you pour out your doubts, pray His promises:

He will never leave me or forsake me. (Hebrews 13.5)

He is my helper. (Hebrews 13.6)

He never changes. (Hebrews 13.8)

He will give me peace that passes understanding as I lay my requests before Him. (Philippians 4.7)

He cares for me. (1 Peter 5.6-7)

He will strengthen, help and uphold me with His gracious hand. (Isaiah 41.10)

He will keep me in perfect peace if my mind is stayed on Him. (Isaiah 26.3)

If I trust Him wholeheartedly, and acknowledge Him in all my ways, He will make my paths straight. (Proverbs 3.5-6)

He has granted us everything pertaining to life and godliness. (1 Peter 1.3-4)

Nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8.35-39)

His love never ceases (Lamentations 3.19-26)

God’s nature is proclaimed to us through His creation and through His word. When this life looms large, look to God who is larger than any trouble we face. When this life is confusing, trust in the Lord of infinite wisdom.
