Do you know how to love others well?

How often do I get so bogged down in my own struggle that I fail to really notice the struggle of the people next to me? I may glance their direction and see them in a moment of triumph only to miss the next moment when they fall flat. We have a tendency to walk as though in a tunnel, not seeing the wider world around us. We focus only on who or what is in front of us (usually through the small screens of our phones) while running the risk of ignoring—or even injuring—the souls beside us.

The Best Way to Resist Temptation in Your Life

Our smartphones have made access to pornography easier than ever. Mobile ordering fuels our craving for instant gratification. The ability to connect to just about anybody anywhere makes it easier to have illicit relationships. Yet despite the tendency to blame technology for rampant sin, temptation has been a problem since the beginning of time. In… Continue reading The Best Way to Resist Temptation in Your Life

For those who are struggling with fear

According to the popular YouVersion Bible App, “the bible verse that was shared, bookmarked, and highlighted most often by the global Bible App community in 2017” was Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you… Continue reading For those who are struggling with fear

You will never look at your laundry the same

I beamed with satisfaction as I folded the last pair of socks. Feeling a renewed sense of vigor, I decided to get a head start on tomorrow’s laundry. I turned to my daughter, who was sitting in the chair reading, and asked, “Would you mind grabbing the clothes from your hamper, as well as your… Continue reading You will never look at your laundry the same

When the Storms of Your Life Will Not Let Up

In West Texas, we get our fair share of storms. It may rain buckets for an hour and flood the streets, or drop baseball-sized hail, destroying life and property. Other times the wind kicks up dust, eliminating visibility and running off with roof tiles. Typically, these storms visit us for a brief period—ranging from one… Continue reading When the Storms of Your Life Will Not Let Up

Am I Teaching My Children to Complain?

We can talk about our blessings all we want. We can make well-designed memes on giving thanks. We can give Texas-sized tributes to God’s gifts, but If we do not end the complaining, we negate the benefits of “thanksgiving.” Worse still, our children mimic the behavior, perpetuating the attitude of ingratitude. Before I correct the grumblings of my children, I should start by curbing my own. If I want my children to live like Christ, I need to model Christ-like behavior.

If You’re Going Through A Dark Valley In Your Marriage

The month of July marked twelve years of marriage for us. This past Tuesday, we cuddled up on the couch to watch the first lesson in The Heart of the Family course. As we listened to Kirk and Chelsea Cameron talking about their story, it caused me to reflect on our own marriage. I remember how often we were… Continue reading If You’re Going Through A Dark Valley In Your Marriage

The Benefits of Reading to Your Children

Connecting with our children is vital. Connecting our children with God is paramount. Books supply a comfortable entry point to discuss uncomfortable topics and provide a context for the consequences of bad behavior.

If it’s hard to love your spouse…

There’s something almost magical about a wedding—even the smallest ones. Two people pledge to become one, exchanging vows to love each other in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for better or for worse. The flaws of the person standing in front of them are overshadowed in the brilliance of romantic ceremony. Thousands… Continue reading If it’s hard to love your spouse…
