“That You May Know…” Scripture Writing Plan September 2023

Have you ever received an important letter in the mail?

Maybe that letter had a fancy wax seal on the envelope. Maybe the paper inside had an expensive, linen feel, a watermark on the stationary, or even an embossed seal on the page.

In short, it had distinct indicators of importance.

God’s signs and wonders have been similar in nature, possessing unique features that distinguish them from non-miracles. A magician’s tricks are simply illusions. Magicians cannot produce a live rabbit from nothingness. It is sleight of hand—a trick. Hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, are astounding to behold, but are a product of natural laws God put into place in this decaying world. If a tornado were to appear in the middle of the ocean on a cloudless and windless day, that would actually be outside the laws of nature, and therefore miraculous.

God’s miracles aren’t whims of fancy; His signs always possess a prescribed purpose. As you read through His word, notice how many times something is done for the purpose of showing that He is the true and living God or to confirm that a messenger truly is from Him. Often such signs (and even prophecies) are accompanied by the words, “That you may know that I am the Lord,” or “That you may know and believe.”

Aside from the miracles we read about in the scriptures, there is already an astounding amount of evidence of God’s existence. Unfortunately, many are either blinded by false teaching or choose to remain in ignorance. Paul wrote in Romans 1:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.”

Romans 1.18-21, ESV

So often, believing in God and following Him always comes back to our free will. As followers of Jesus, we have been called to proclaim the good news of the gospel and the truth of God, yet in the end, a heart has to be willing to choose Him or reject Him.

This month’s scriptures have been chosen for the express purpose of showing some of the many instances when God has revealed His power to people at various times. In each case, He gave them undeniable signs, but in some cases people believed and in others, they did not. Jesus, who is the Son of God, used similar phrasing during His time on earth. He was tugging at the memory of the Jews. Some recognized it and still rejected Him, but others believed and followed Him wholeheartedly. God gave all humanity what it needs to know Him, but each person must decided whether they will accept Him or reject Him.

I hope you will join us this month as we consider some of the ways God revealed His power and nature to people in history.
