Who doesn’t want to feel like they are part of something special?
Don’t most people crave a sense of belonging? More importantly, don’t they want to belong to something large and consequential? There is always some new movement for (or against) some new and critical issue. Yet many of the organizations and movements which seem to be popular today are forgotten tomorrow. Not only that, but major job opportunities and political positions can morph from dream to nightmare, or simply disappear completely. Over time, we begin to realize what God already knows: “As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.” (Psalm 103.15-16, ESV) In other words, as the rock band Kansas sang, “All we are is dust in the wind.”
Our time here is short.
So what really matters in this life?
You and I are offered the opportunity to become part of something big. Something inestimably valuable. Something eternal. Eternity is something every mortal faces: either it will be spent with God or spent without Him. While we are still a little more than “dust” or “the dash between the dates,” we are offered a choice: follow Jesus and spend eternity with Him, or follow the course of the world and spend eternity suffering without Him.
In the letter of 1 Peter, the apostle reminds his first-century brothers and sisters (and us as well), that those in Christ are part of something priceless. Because we belong to Christ, we are set apart as holy–an integral part of God’s house. God invites us to be imitate His holiness, goodness, and lovingkindness! What could be greater than that?
As you write through the book of 1 Peter this month, pay special attention to how we are set apart for the Lord:
- In what way are we to be different?
- What is the purpose of this difference?
- What will be the end result of all that we suffer?
I hope you’ll join us this month as we consider the ways God has sealed us and set us apart for His purpose!
