Cotton is nearing its harvest here in West Texas. On a good year, the cotton will both survive and grow waist high. Right about now, the bolls are bursting open and the fields transform into a glorious white expanse. However, this harvest, most of the cotton is knee-high, the fields are sparsely dotted with white puffs, and the plants themselves seem a little pathetic. Fortunately, the crop isn’t so pathetic that it won’t be harvested, but it the result is still disappointing for the farmers.
Plants are expected to grow and produce something. As a follower of Jesus, the seed of His word has been planted in your heart. He expects you to grow, produce fruit, and increase more and more. The qualities listed in 2 Peter 1 are ones which every child of God should possess and grow. But are you and I doing this? Or, like this year’s cotton harvest, are we simply making it? Important note: we are not saved by or work nor how much we work; our work is intended to bring glory to God. Lackluster, apathetic, just-getting-by work is not what we should offer to the Father who abundantly gives us all the goodness we enjoy.
In spite of our own “droughts” (hard times) and struggles, God provides us plenty of groundwater to keep on going. Don’t give up. Increase more and more!
“…if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1.8, ESV)
